Prime Video continuously innovates and builds technologies to improve the global customer experience

BA Winston, VP of Technology, speaks about Prime Video’s innovations, tech challenges, and improving the customer experience.

Recently, BA Winston (VP, Technology – Prime Video) was interviewed by The Hindu newspaper in India about live streaming, Prime Video’s rural penetration strategy, and building innovations to delight customers globally.

“We invest in content, but we believe that unless we invest in technology that can power the content, and to stream to our customers devices, it’s not very useful,” says Winston. “So, we have a lot of investment in technology and we also want to build technologies that can enable and improve the experience overall, globally.”

Winston also explains Prime Video’s rural strategy for India as being based on 1) optimizing existing or building new network connectivity, 2) optimizing video compression formats for different bit rates and bandwidth conditions, and 3) using machine learning (ML)-based optimizations across Prime Video’s chain for the best possible experience.

You can read more from Winston’s interview in We want to build technologies that can enable, improve overall experience, says Amazon Prime Video’s VP on The Hindu website, and in an excerpt from the print edition of The Hindu below:

When it comes to live streaming in India, it's always Day 1 for us, says Amazon {rime Video's Tech VP Winston, assuring that the firm will continue tom optimise experience, introduce new features.
Prime Video is investing in technologies apart from content to grow its presence in India, says its vice president - technology, BA Winston.
Q: How are you growing in India in terms of technology, including investments?
A: We invest in content but we belie that unless we invest in technology that can power the content, and to steam to our customers devices, it's not very useful. So, we have a lot of investment in technology and we also want to build technologies that can enable and improve the experience overall, globally. We always say that when it comes to live streaming and also live streaming here in India, it's Day 1 for us. We will continue to improve and optimise our experience, introduce new features. Our partnership with AWS has been awesome. We have Amazon advertising, Prime Video and AWS all working together to ensure that we serve our customers in India.
Q: What is your rural penetration strategy?
A: We have dedicated teams who work with network providers across the country to optimise connectivity or build new capacity when needed. We work towards optimising our video compression formats for different bit rates and bandwidth conditions. We optimise our algorithms using ML, for different cellular and network conditions to adapt quickly to changing network conditions.
Q: What is your view about the issue of latency when it comes to live streaming? How is it going to be solved?
A: With latency, we have been experimenting with a totally different network protocol. It's not a new protocol, but it's typically not used in streaming these days; it's called UDP - User Datagram Protocol , and that can provide a way for us to significantly reduce latency while providing high quality streams.
